Is your thyroid stressssssed??










Are you stressssssed?  Is your Thyroid?


Who isn't stressed is the question? So much to deal with these days. It ain't your Grandma's world we live in today. A lot of folks feel like they are "peddling as fast as they can" and getting nowhere when they realize they are on a "stationary bike" in life! HA!

So stress is something we all must contend with in these fast paced times. Problem is the body ain't necessarily "keeping up" and various systems in the body can be "overworked and underpaid" in nourishment. Thyroid is a master gland that takes a beating when it comes to stress. So how can you determine if you have thyroid issues?

First Things First:

First you will need to see your doctor to determine if you do have a thyroid problem. Which can be tricky as the "normal range" is not necessarily "normal". If it is determined you are "border line" or there is not a problem, ramp up the health of your thyroid as a preventative. 

Feed Your Thyroid: 


There are many foods and nutrients that can nourish thyroid.
For example Brazil Nuts - which contain selenium, a trace mineral, that in small amounts benefits the thyroid. Just 2 Brazil Nuts a day contain recommended amounts. They are delicious and remind me of the "meat" of a fresh coconut in texture and taste.



Also seaweed or kelp - which contains iodine. For some people that may be something they are "missing". Approx 12% of the population is deficient in iodine. Now I know seaweed is probably not on your shopping list, but roasted seaweed seems to be the most accessible form. It stores nicely in the pantry, with a long shelf life. It is salty and tastes pretty good in my opinion.
"Almost" like potato chips :-) Humor me, that's the closest thing I'll get to one!

Or you may have more serious issues & suspect you have a sluggish thyroid. In many situations, much of this can be attributed to STRESS and lots of it! Have you ever heard the song that goes something like "the knee bone, connected to the thigh bone, the thigh bone, connected to the hip bone..." The body is all "connected", it has no "fences".


How Stress Affects The Thyroid: 
When we are faced with stress, our bodies go into "fight or flight" response and certain hormones are released by the adrenal gland, hormones that would give the body a burst of energy and strength. Today as a result of stressful days at the office, a traffic jam on your way home, and faced with it when we get home, it seems we are always in "fight or flight" mode. Increased stress levels, can have a negative effect on the body with symptoms including adrenal fatigue, suppressed thyroid function, an imbalance in blood sugar levels, and increased abdominal (adipose) fat.*

One of the hormones released during this “fight or flight” response is cortisol, which increases blood sugar, suppresses the immune system, and aids in fat, protein and carbohydrate metabolism. 
Cortisol levels also have a direct relationship with the thyroid, and they act synergistically with one another. Cortisol assists the thyroid hormone in working more efficiently, and the correct amount of cortisol – not too high or too low – supports normal thyroid function. When cortisol gets too high, triggered by the adrenal glands response to elevated stress, it causes a delayed response to the thyroid hormone receptors. When this occurs, the hormones aren't allowed to work at optimal levels, leaving you feeling sluggish, leading to a higher chance of stress eating, and giving up physical activity.
